Overview

Carbon Fuels, LLC has developed the breakthrough Charfuel® Coal Refining Process, which refines abundant, raw coal in conceptually the same manner as crude oil is refined at petroleum refineries to cleanly produce high-value liquid fuels, petrochemicals, and clean power plant feedstocks. Thus, gasoline, jet fuel, ultra-low-sulfur diesel (“green diesel”), fuel oil, and marine fuels, as well as essential petrochemicals such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and methanol are refined from raw coal (bituminous, sub-bituminous or lignite) using this process.

The Charfuel® Coal Refining Process is not a coal conversion process, like pyrolysis, and is not an indirect liquefaction process, like the long-available (but very costly and complex) Fischer-Tropsch process. The Charfuel® Coal Refining Process directly refines raw coal (using only air and the raw coal itself as refinery feedstock) to economically produce a range of products traditionally associated with the refining of crude oil.  The Charfuel® process is capable of producing liquid fuels and petrochemicals in their final, fully refined form, or refining the co-products to the point where it can be further refined in existing petroleum refineries—replacing the crude oil feedstock petroleum refineries use today.

CHARFUEL® COAL REFINING PRODUCTS

A significant advantage of the Charfuel® process is its flexibility. The technology can produce an array of products for which lucrative markets already exist—and which are in need of additional supply. Like oil, the refined components of coal are far more valuable (many multiples) than the coal itself. The Charfuel® Coal Refining Process can produce the following slate of products/co-products:

  • Gasoline
  • Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel (“Green Diesel”)
  • Jet fuel (Jet A)
  • Ultra-Low-Sulfur #4 Fuel Oil
  • Kerosene
  • Naphtha
  • Petrochemicals (e.g., benzene, toluene, xylene)
  • Sulfur
  • Ammonia
  • Methanol
  • Industrial-Grade CO2 (captured during the production process)
  • Char (a cleaner-burning fuel for power plants & other thermal energy applications)
